Dear Ms. Pillay

I am writing to you regarding the case of Mohammad Reza Haddadi, an Iranian prisoner at risk of execution for an alleged murder committed at age 15.

On July 4, the Committee of Human Rights Reporters reported that Mohammad’s execution date had been set for July 7, 2010. Haddadi confessed to the murder after a man over the age of 18 who was allegedly was involved in the murder convinced Haddadi to confess and accept the murder charge in exchange for a sum of money.

Mohammad was 15 years old at the time of the crime and is therefore is guaranteed protection from execution by international law and UN treaties. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states, “No child shall be subjected to torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. Neither capital punishment nor life imprisonment without possibility of release shall be imposed for offences committed by persons below eighteen years of age.”

Given the above, I ask that you use any means in your power to obtain the following for Mohammad Reza Haddadi:

- if an imminent execution is planned, that it be immediately halted;

- for his death sentence to be overturned on the grounds that he was condemned as a child offender;

- that he be granted a new trial if charges against him remain, with access to legal counsel, a public hearing by an impartial tribunal and protection from torture or coerced confessions as laid out in the ICCPR and UDHR (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and from the death penalty, as guaranteed by the CRC (Convention on the Rights of the Child).

Mohammad Reza Haddadi ‘s execution date has been set for 7 July 2010 and there is an immediate danger to his life. We ask that you force the Islamic Republic of Iran to comply with international law and norms, abide by treaties that the UN places its name on, and act to save his life.
