My dear friends,
I have only recently discovered this club and was only to happy to become a member.
I read the story by Mr. Chekhov. The story is about a lawyer . Lawyers are known for being very logical and having a great understanding of worldy goods , the lawyer character is very often used in stories to represent a character with a fondness for materialism.......mind you...i mean usually.
Such is the lawyer of our story when it all starts.
He even gets ahead of himself claiming to give up his freedom willingly to prove the importance of money .
As the the time advances, the lawyer tries studying all kind of things, he visits every corner of this world through the books with his mind if not with his body. He tries studying many different things , learning different langages ....
Why?
Does he consider them of importance for the time he is released from his prison?
By and by, he gets fed up of each subject and turns to another one.....Till he realizes that all of these would be worthless , they would not bring happiness on their own....
He was an intelligent man without a doubt, as he manages to learn different languages without anyone's help....Still he does not find satisfaction ....
He spends little time for learning great many volumes of books...But then he spends a very long time on reading one book.....The Gospel.
In the end he leaves before the time is due, in exchange of 15 years of his life he does NOT want money, but he wants to stay away from it....deliberately and of his own free will.
This was the price he had got for all those years of his life, the knowledge of good and bad, of unfailing everlasting truth that has stood against the time.....THAT THERE ARE OTHER THINGS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN THIS WORLD
AND WHAT IT OFFERS...THERE IS A WORLD BEYOND THAT WILL BE WAITING FOR US.

I think the first suggestion was very good and the discussion can continue : the bet by Anton Chekhov is really a wonderfull short story for discussion because this story can be discussed by different points of views : because of the form and the theme , and it s a considerable story by both points of views , and after all, it s really short and doesn't take too long … . i read previous comments about it, they were good but not enough i think The Bet can have longer and more detailed discussion. So first I will write my own comments about the bet and, second I will write a summery and some of Shahriyar Mandanipor s ideas (Persian writer and critic)about The Bet that I ve read before in Persian. But for those who didnt read the story yet, that s better if they read the whole story first ,especially because discussing the form requires reading the whole story .

My own comments about The Bet :first of all, I like to discuss the form. The atmosphere that the narrator makes is very nice , the banker after fifteen years at the last night is walking in his room and is remembering all these years and he is thinking . However the narrator is third person but by the art of Chekhov you wont feel urself away from the banker . Chekhov drops u step by step in the suspense as he does in most of his short stories . the suspenses of the story are very powerfull and at the end there is a big shock . the language that he chooses for the story is chekhov especial language , it doesn't have any thing unnecessary , especially I love the way that the letter is written . what about the theme ? Of course if this story was just a nice story because of the form it wasn't any thing more than many criminal or adventurous stories that we may just enjoy them once and forget them soon . but first of all magic way of narrating of Chekhov and his especial language and then the theme and meaning of the story make it distinguished from valueless criminal stories . about the theme first I should say that the event is brilliant and unique, u can rarely find a story that has similar happening , and the interesting thing is that the story has been written in a way that u can believe, however in real life it may seem unbelievable . Chekhov successfully makes u believe it . … oh … I can not stop writing about the bet and Chekhov art I wish u read THE BET or at least the summary that I will write down here in the following and write more delicate and detailed things that u notice about it : THE BET
Summery (with some of Mandanipor s ideas about The Bet) :
One night after a long discussion of capital punishment and life-imprisonment , that which is better, in a party between a rich banker and a young lawyer , the banker promises to give two millions to the lawyer if the lawyer can stay in prison for fifteen years . for this bet it was decided that the lawyer must undergo his imprisonment under the strictest observation, in a garden wing of the banker's house . Everything necessary, books, music, wine, he could receive in any quantity by sending a note through a particular window . if only for two minutes before the time the lawyer leaves the prison, the banker will be free from the obligation to pay him the two millions.Now this is the last night of fifteen years . by all these years , the lawyer has passed different periods . Chekhov made all the actions of the lawyer in all these years the symbols of human-being actions : first he avoids wine … then he wants music(art)… then writing and writing …after that he wants wine …then reading books ,learning many things and languages (science)…and at last he reads holy books . Until this part of the story the lawyer is successful and the writer , I mean Chekhov , is successful to write an amusing story . we would think that the day after , the lawyer will win and will get the money and can enjoy all the enjoyable things that human being can experience by that money ! but here there is another suspense , the banker isnt rich like the time that he bet, and giving two millions to the lawyer will make him really poor, and he is thinking about killing the lawyer .now here Chekhov can finish the story , for example he can say : the lawyer win and get the money or didn't get or the banker kill the lawyer as he wanted , and the story will be a good and amusing story like many other stories that are amusing but if Chekhov finish the story in this way he wont be Chekhov any longer ! he will finish the story in a way that it sticks in ur mind for a long time . the lawyer some minutes to the end of the time comes out of the prison and leaves an attractive letter for the banker . at last the banker , is happy because of not losing his money , and is sad because he feels deeply humble . and the story will stay with the reader for ever .
If u cant read the story compeletely , at least read the letter .

I don't think english club members are beginners or something else,that's the matter of lack of time,every one of us has his/her own problems,reading a novel needs a lot of free time and discussing about it you know needs more time and of course mood!in this sitution short story is best choice I think.

what's your opinion about the part that sally and harry went to grave and sally talks about "unknown" soldiers?I think it is the strongest point of story.
If im not be wrong the setting of the story is 2 city in England,one in north and the other in south.north is a manufaturing part and the other farming part that made up the story.there is a huge difference between these two part as we can feel through the story.south with peace and warmness but north ... vice versa...
